Just to note that 25,000 is really an average sort of salary. It is enough to remove most of the main poverty-related causes of unhappiness (not living in your own place; unable to afford cheese) although anyone whose main interest was money would expect to earn a great deal more than that.

Someone with two degrees could surely become a teacher, and virtually all teachers earn more than 25,000.

Not sure about teachers earning in excess of 25k...could be wrong. Regardless, and even if you have a good stock of qualifications, there's no point entering teaching (which, no matter how many degrees, you still need to undertake further study and training for) unless you have the passion for it.

I also happen to have 2 degrees...and at the present time feel like I wouldn't want to be a teacher for any amount of money - though I have considered it in the past.

I considered teacher training for a while - decent money, long holidays - but I think you have to like kids don't you?!

OP I am joing the Police next time they are recruiting in my county, The starting wage is over £20k, you get paid to train, a brilliant pension scheme, plus lots of other benefits. The social life outside of work is amazing & its a very exciting job.

How do you find out when they're recruiting? (not that I've just decided to do it, but it's something to look into...)

There's a national site (can't remember...Google "police recruitment"), but it's always handy to seek out and bookmark the webpage of your local force(s), as they usually contain recruitment info too.

Never a truer worth said. I've changed jobs 5 times in 20 years and never had an interview because I knew the right people at the right time

Ok - thinking proactively... who are the right people and how do I get to know them?!

brokeinwales, let me put a different thought into your head if I may:

1)It is not how much you make, but how much you keep.
2)It is not always how much you have got, but how you are keeping it.
3)Even thought it is well kept, investing it sensibly can make you much more, but you can also loose it too. So do not invest on a whim and think it through.

To put all three items into one statement, "The fool and his money are easily parted."
Gardening is great - apparently cannabis is quite a worth while cash crop to grow, and it is becoming spring, probably time to plant :)http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6349945/Cannabis-factory-of-Amazonian-proportions-found-in-North-Wales.html

Also you do not have to like kids to become a teacher, just do not hurt them too much. How many teachers at your school liked working with kids? In mine they were mostly ambivalent, some viewed us a a necessary evil, and ones pro kids were the minority.

My favourite job was the worst paid job I've ever had, Sometimes working from 7am to well past 11pm. Working in freezing cold temperatures, wet through when it rained, and baked in the sun. No official breaks just coffee on the run, driving up and down the country.
I absolutely loved working at the Motor Auctions, could be driving a Fiat panda one minute and a Rolls Royce the next. I would do it all over again if I was younger.

I have a degree and a Masters (but both in soft artsy subjects, and both gained many many years ago - so limited use really).

You're still a graduate - assuming you got a 2:1 or above in that first degree, you would be eligible for a lot of graduate schemes. Don't write off your degrees yet.
I actually don't recall ever seeing a job and thinking "ooh I'd really love to do that!".

Honestly? I don't think anyone ever has. There are jobs you hate and jobs you tolerate, but to earn good money, you have to hit performance targets and that is always going to be stressful, regardless of how much you do or don't enjoy the main part of the job.

You say you're in a admin/finance role - have you thought about retraining as an accountant?

I'm not a teacher, but if you count the hours worked (marking, preparation etc) the hourly rate must be more like minimum wage. Unless you teach drama of PE I suspect....
