Advice for first time gardener!

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to get my garden sorted, I've got a voucher for lots of baby plants from rocket gardens which I want to redeem soon but I'd like some advice before I start.

I'm going to plant most of them in tubs as we are in a rented house so don't want to get into trouble for digging up the lawn :p

The plants I'll be getting are as follows:

Pumpkins x 3
Courgettes x 3
Strawberries x 3
Tomatoes x 3 (don't eat tomatoes so will prob give these away!)
Runner beans x 5
Borlotti beans x 5
Beetroot x 10
Peas x 10
Carrots x 20
Mixed Lettuces x 10
Spinach x 10
Potatoes x 10

I've got 6 containers already, but will probably need some more, what I need to know is whether any of the plants really need to be in the ground, as there is a bit of space at the bottom of the garden I could maybe use.

Also will any of the plants work if I put them in pots together?

I've also got 2 big strawberry planters, as I've only got 3 strawberry plants to put in can they be used for anything else. Each planter has 8 pockets.

My other problem is I'm gonna need lots of compost, I don't drive so ideally I need to get it delivered, everywhere seems to cost a fortune for delivery. Can anyone recommend any good places to buy compost either online or in person with reasonable delivery?

Thanks in advance :D

Pumpkins will spread everywhere, they really should be in the ground

Courgettes are same family, so unless they are "bush" ones the will also ramble everywhere

You could use the strawberry planters for herbs.

    Thanks, guys
I've found a site which delivers compost so I'm going to order from them.
They also sell a raised bed for £9.99 so I'm thinking of getting that as well and try to make a little veg patch at the bottom of the garden!

Is it worth getting the raised bed? and if so which plants would be best in it? (it's only 1m x 1m)
