Which ADSL Filter?

Hi all, I'm completely exasperated by an ongoing problem with slow internet browsing but I'm coming to the conclusion (having exhausted all other possibilities with the ISP & Telecom comp) that the only explanation is that the adsl filter was faulty & that the one we bought new as a replacement is also faulty / incompatible .....
Anyway, we're going to have to get another one so the question is, is there a reliable good make that we should get so we don't waste our money?
Thanks in advance

These are generally reckoned to be first rate...

.. but I'd recommend you try one of these..

instead if you have any extension sockets.
That said I seriously doubt that you've had two duff filters. It may be that removing ringwires is necessary - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm or it could just be that you have a long line or poor ISP. Posing up your router stats http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php will allow me (and others) to comment on your line and if you spill the beans on your ISP we can comment on them too.0 -
It is very unlikely that a second filter is also faulty! More details of your set up would help e.g. how many phone sockets? Which ISP etc.
Try plugging the ADSL filter into the master test socket and post your modem/router line stats:

Hiya, we've been through absolutely everything with karoo & on these two threads, it really does seem to be the only explanation left, the line stats don't show anything, you looked at them already & they can't see anything wrong at their end.

They did send an engineer for a 3rd time who did nothing except plug his console into my line which temp fixed the problem. This morning I temp fixed it by ringing my mobile, using my mobile to ring the home (don't think these worked) so I took all the wires out the filter & put them back in - that worked for a short time.0 -
you do not need the filter for broadband, it works very well without one!!! Also with no filter, this is the best signal you are going to get. Try it without a filter first.
The filter is there to cut off the lower frequencies enabling to use your phone.0 -
Ok I see what you mean so I've just cut out the phone & the filter by borrowing the phone cable & using it to connect the router to the main socket but .... it hasn't helped the problem, I just don't get what it could be. I know what using the phone sometimes helps, or them calling us, earlier today I disconnected everything & reconnected it - that helped & them plugging their console in to monitor the line helps. Them resetting it at their end usually helps as well but really we'd be ringing every day if we called every time it goes slow. There's nothing else it can be that I know of.
Well, at least I didn't waste more money on another filter - thanks
I expect customer services are going to ring me & tell me there's nothing else they can do. 0 -
you should look at the stats of you router as they should reveal all, especially event logs, and line attenuation and sn margin. The former tells you what is happening and the other two have a big effect on speed.
Personally I'd look at much more broadband orientated forum like http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ than a money saving site, for this type of problem0 -
Thanks I'll check those things out & have a look at that website

You will not get any better advice over there - some Techies on here post over there as well.
You need to escalate your complaint to a higher level. The script monkey who told you to go out and buy another ADSL filter is obviously a muppet! Stop paying for the service and see what they say. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Ok. I've changed the DNS settings to google servers and the MTU to 1458 which makes the xbox faster & pages here load faster but it hasn't fixed the problem, it's hard to describe, it's still like trudging through mud using the internet especially the context menu & multiple tabs & I know that that sounds like browser & context menu issues, but when it works it really flies. I keep having to even convince myself it's not my laptop because they are witch hunting my equipment.
I think I will ask to speak to the lady there - the only one that did take the effort to do pings on both laptops, said that it's definitely not our laptops & said it's a mystery but one that we can work on. She did some stuff with the DNS servers as well but then said see how it goes & the next day we got muppet back again telling us the stats are great at their end. Funny how the lady could tell me what time the internet went slow but yet no-one else can see it?
