My pea seedings - roots coming out!

Hi All,

My lovely pea seedlings are just popping up, about an inch high. My book says to plant them out when they are 10-15 cm high and I have started them in toilet roll inners, as suggested by my book.

But the roots are already coming out the end of the loo roll! I am not sure if I should be moving them anywhere? Please advise if anyone can!

Thanks
:)

They should be fine - last weekend I planted out a load of broad beans that had about 3 inches of root showing out of the bottom of the tube - they are all sitting happily out in the raised bed upright and growing. In reality the roots won't grow that much longer, they should just bush out - when you plant them out just make sure there is enough room in the hole for the extra roots.

I am about to plant peas - can you tell me how you use the loo roll inners and what is the advantage?

    Thanks from a newbie

Advantage is free, and tall, so give the pea root a bit of training to go downwards

I just tie my innards in bundles of about 6, using garden string, stand in a seed tray, and fill the centres with compost, some of course misses and fall into the tray, but I tend to leave that there as added moisture reserve, and extra root run once roots have reached base of loo roll

Then when ready to plant out, cut string and use as individual pots, plant out the whole thing, roll and all, it will rot away

Oh help!! I've been hardening off my peas which I grew in newspaper pots but they're about 10 inches high - I'm guessing from reading this thread that they should go out now?? I thought it was still a bit cold at night??

I started another lots last week so I do have some to fall back on but I don't want any of my 'babies' to die!!

They should be fine to put out now.
