Who do I contact to check my gas meter?
Options
Hi everyone, I really need some help!
I've just received a statement bill from new supplier E-on with an estimated bill for my gas usage over the past three months. I have since checked the bill and find it to be substantially higher than they have estimated. I have worked out that with the actual reading, our bill would be approx £600 just for gas just for the past three months. I realise prices have increased etc etc but this just can't be right.
Both my husband and I work full time and the house therefore has been empty for at least 8 hours every day. We have GCH and an old style boiler and water tank (which I know is not the most economical but we have no choice at the moment) we also have a gas hob, although that's used at max for 15 / 20 mins per day. That's it, that's what we use.
Is there someone I can contact who will come and look at my very ancient gas meter and tell me if it is correct and working properly and is supplying just our house and not the entire street?!
I checked on U-switch website and when I came to enter my details on my gas useage an error message popped up and told me that the maximum I should be paying per quarter for normal domestic gas should be no more than £489.
Please help! I really don't know what else I can do.
Many thanks

£489 is a perfectly normal winter bill for gas, not a maximum - there is a glitch in uSwitch's system. (£600 is far too high for one quarter of your annual gas bill but perfectly reasonable for a winter's quarter iyswim.)
Your gas supplier will arrange to test your meter for you for a cost of £60 to £90 (refundable if the meter is faulty) or you can call out a heating plumber to have a look at your system to see if they can guesstimate how inefficient your system is for £35 to £50 (not, of course, refundable).0 -
When you switched to EON, did they use the correct start readings? Were these readings used as the start readings on this bill? Did you keep a record of the readings you gave to EON?0

Hi Really?
Have you recently switched to us or just moved into the property? If so, make sure the opening meter reading on your account is accurate. Could be we have opened the account to an incorrect/estimated reading.
If the opening and current readings are correct, then it is very likely you will have used the gas.
I agree with Kim, the amount quoted is not that unusual for a winter bill, particularly considering how cold it has been over the last few months.
Have a chat to our consumption team. Tell them what appliances you have and they will talk you through your usage.
They can also arrange for a check meter to be fitted to test the accuracy of your meter. Again, as Kim says, there will be a charge for this if the meter turns out to be ok. Therefore, I would exhaust all other possibilities before going down this route.
Check you are on the best tariff for your circumstances. There are extra discounts available for paying with a Direct Debit and managing your account online.
Pop your usage in kWh on to one of the comparison sites and see if there are better deals available with other suppliers.
Give us a call if you are struggling with the bill. Ask for a payment arrangement to be set up. We will be able to spread payments over a more manageable period.
Hope this helps a little, Really? Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so.
