Should land lord have told me about burgalry?

Just a quick question

I've been living in a ground floor flat for just over 2 months and the previous tennants stopped by today to pick up some mail. They happened to mention that shortly before they moved out they were burgled. The front outside door was kicked in then the flat front door.

The land lord hasn't mentioned this and now it's got me worried about leaving my flat empty.

Can i ask him to fit an extra lock to my front door or make the outside door more secure?

Also should he have told me?

why should he have told you ? you can certainly ask him to fit an extra lock, or offer to do so yourself and provide him with a key ...

Why and how is what happened years ago going to affect you now- do you think the same burglar is going to come back?

OP implies that this actually happened about 2-3 months ago. If the burglars found the property an easy mark they may well return once enough time has passed.

According to police statistics any burgled property is much more likely to be targeted again. But no, the landlord has no obligation whatsoever to tell you. You're not buying it, and he is hardly likely to want to scare off all potential tenants.

And the really nasty burglars wait til your insurance money pays out and they see you having your new expensive stuff delivered.

    What about an alarm?
You can get cheapy shed alarms - or if you want a better system they do easy fit wireless ones too.

Any perhaps they should tell you - it'd up their responsibility to make their property more secure with an alarm/better locks etc

Once you know if affects your insurance too.

Don't ask such a ridiculous question! If I’d have known the place had been burgled in broad daylight 2 months ago I wouldn't be spending my hard earned cash on renting a place that wasn't safe to live in or have all my personal possessions. WOULD YOU?

I'm not trying to get out of my agreement I like living there I just would have liked the choice to begin with but since I’m there now I was just wondering if it was a reasonable request to the land lord to fit an additional lock.

He's a really nice guy anyway and has been very helpful so far so I don't automatically think he's a bad bloke or anything, I’m not that judgemental.

I've already found out now though that he doesn't have to tell me unless I asked him before hand.

Not ridiculous at all! A LL is under no obligation to tell you about this, or about the kids down the road who were throwing snowballs 3 months ago, or anything else.

Any house/flat can be burgled. The previous tenants did not expect to be burgled (because the flat had never been burgled before!!!) but it happened to them. I've lived here for 13 years and never been burgled but it could happen tomorrow.

If you're concerned, ask the neighbourhood police to come and do an assessment of security, and ask the LL to upgrade locks etc. He may be willing. If not, as suggested, offer to pay, but get his permission in writing before doing anything structural.

There could be some money in this for you. I think you should sue.

    Erm...sue for what exactly?
Unlike the majority of the UK population i believe in hard work and paying my way. I'm not so unintelligent as not to know that everyone ends up paying more through insurance premiums when lazy ars*holes (who think the world owes them a living) claim for every stupid thing they can think of in compensation. I have no interest in suing anyone.

Anyway my questions has been answered so thanks to the normal people who have given me good info.
