Do you live in Aylesbury, is your home really insured.

I live in Aylesbury where my type of house build is in the 1000's, however its not a standard build and i have yet to get a company that will insure it other than my rather expensive Nationwide quote at £425.25 buildings and contents.
For those of you who dont know, this build type is in the 100,000's across the country, it consists of a terraced house where by the left and right walls are brick, and the front and back walls are timber with plasterboard on the inside and faced on the outside, with either tile, plyboard and shingle or some sort of cladding.
Direct line, Aviva, Churchill, Tesco, Magnet and many more do not and will not insure this house. My current insurance is with Nationwide who are underwritten by Churchill, i have been told that as i took the insurance out at a time this build type was insurable they are bound to re insure it by thier terms, yet, as we can see they are not bound by the price, and if i make any ammendments to the policy they can cancel it leaving me without insurance, amendments being only buildings and getting contents and such elsewhere, as they would have to do a new quote, and thus wont be able to insure the property.
I asked why this was and they could not tell me, and when i mentioned that this build type is in the 100,000's are all these people without insurance i was told by one company "probably, as they didnt put the correct build type when they were quoted and insured".
So, as the thread suggests, are you insured, you might want to check.
BTW, my quote is as cheap as i can get it, no claims, a burglar alarm, occupied all the time, others can insure it for app £200 if it had a brick structure to the front and rear.
Any suggestions, other than rebuilding my house?
Hohum.
Dave.

Speak to a local broker (Not Swintons), they will have experience of covering these types of properties and know which companies will cover them.
Beaware due to the increased fire risk they are more expensive to insure than a normal property.0 -
£400 for a non standard build, buildings and contents doesn't seem too bad. £200 for buildings and contents seems very cheap anyway, does that provide much cover? I presume you were aware when you bought/moved in that it was non-standard construction and this was disclosed to you?0

Was i aware, no, like when we 1st ventured into the loft 1 month after moving in to find the roof has been repaired extensivly due to a hot air baloon landing on it. Last year the ants took some of the morter out of the brickwork to build a new home, winter came, rain poured in through the hole, damaged my carpet and unit standing near it, insurance company said NO, as it was damaged by animals or something, i argued the toss about insects not animals, however, 1 man against a conglomatry will never win.
I am somewhat the kind of person that attracts bad luck, I have a brand new car, that, on Monday is going in to have a new gearbox and 2 punctures mended, trust me, i attract bad luck like a shoe to dog poo.
Like the idea of going local, thanks, will pop up town in a bit and shop around. Not going to cancel this insurance till i find a good replacement if you think it's not a bad price, as it is i don't think i'm going to beat it.0 -
There are some insurers that are able to cover more unusual and bespoke properties.
I work for a broker and we only have one on our books which is Prestige but if you look on google i'm sure you could find some others - or as already suggested go through a broker so they can shop around for you.
Depending on what cover you have £400 dosent sound too bad - especially if that covers buildings, contents and possibly accidental damage. Not really comping any more as too ill - but hoping to win £1000+ in 2017 in cash prizes - watch this space!0
