ok more confused what exactly must the laptop (not dell as I know of probs there) have on it to use with the 3g or wifi cards that t-moble or vodaphone have - what should I look for on the laptop spec?

a standard pcmcia slot, not express (unless voda etc have express cards available now?) For wifi (not via 3g, via bt or cable or wireless hotspot), ideally get a laptop with wifi built-in, it's easier and neater.

misco give em out free with laptops..

The 3G card you have will be a PCMCIA card like this one

Laptop pci cards are not that common and at the moment I dont know of a 3G card that uses PCMCIA express but it is a few months since I looked at them.

as for buying a laptop now I would go for PCMCIA rather than the new express version pcmcia has been arround for years without much change so the change over to express is going to be a long one so new products should still be standard size for a few years to come.
