HELP! Computer dunce needs modem help

My brother has set me up with a super fast and extra super cheap new computer (with 17" tft) for less than £300 via his Spanish business account.

Enough gloating and start grovelling......HELP PLEASE,

It didn't come with a modem as we have an external thing which came from BT when we upgraded to Broadband, but, I can't for the life of me get it to work on the new comp, and all searches etc have brought me to the conclusion that my internet connection isn't using this modem but an internal one which we used to use for a dial-up connection.

To be on the safe side and to ensure a good/fast connection I am resigned to buying a new modem, but, which one? and what specs am I looking for?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cozzie

in your settings you'll need to disable your dial up connection or remove it completely.
to disable open internet explorer, click on tools, internet options then conncetions then click NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION.Or just delete the dial up account completely in the same place.

ianian99 is correct with his post but also consider:-

If you are connected to broadband you don’t need a modem as you have the ”external thing which came from BT” (a router/ADSL modem?) but what you do need is a network card to connect it to inside your computer, or you may be lucky and have an onboard one on your motherboard.
Have you any instructions that came with your computer so you can read up about it?
I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes.

I do, wether I can translate them properly or not is another question.

    What am I looking for?

    How stupid do I sound?

    "What am I looking for?"

A socket on the back pannel of your computer with a socket that will accept the other end of the cable from the "external thing which came from BT"
Might be marked 10/100Mbps, NIC, LAN or Network and looks very similar to a telephone socket.

I have had the old HD slaved into the new comp and tried to connect via this, to no avail. I then tried to copy the BT software and it wouldn't allow me.

My old HD/comp tells me in "Internet Properties" that I have a "DSLwanUSB" which is being used to connect to 't'internet, yet, when I go into "modems" in CP I apparently have a "Standard 1200" in COM1 and an "Intel MD5690" in COM3.

Now I am really confused because on top of that my old comp isn't connected to anything via the socket that looks like a phone plug.

    Aarrrrrgh!

Edit - Yes, it's the voyager 105 and is connected vis a USB cable - Do I see a light at the end of that tunnel?
