I agree with all of above...also to invest in a REALLy good vacuum, Miele cat and dog seems to get good reviews.
I think I have heard about some kind of wipe ( petal wipes?) that can be used on animals.
I would also recommend that you seek out a GOOD homeopath as this treatment may be able to help de-sensitise hubby. I know it gets a lot of bad press but don't knock it till you have tried it as it really can help.
    Good luck

Alot of good sound advice on this thread so far - but wanted to highlight paddypaws re the homeopath - get recommended to a good one - they really can help here!

One more thing to add to the excellent advice here is the Lloyds allergy reliever. I bought one after reading about them on here and it has done wonders for mine and my DD's hayfever. A friend got one and used it when she came to stay and it helped with her reaction to the cats.

I know this will sound really far out there as not conventional but EFT has helped loads including me with allergies. I've had all relevant tests at hospital to confirm pet allergy and was desperate as love our doggie and like you couldn't part with her. :(

So i read up on it and did it myself online, it took about 4 goes but its gone, i get the odd itchy eye but i think thats when i'm tired.

Also my mate has severe hayfever and i suggested it to her and although not completely gone she is on minor medication now to control it and she said people commented on her wellness as usually she is bad even dosed up.

I just was willing to give anything a go...but you can also find a person who practisices it but of course that will cost :)

Honestly i'm not wierd...well not that much :D

I have the answer - keep the pets get rid of the husband:D easy all solved.

    Sorry had to do:rotfl:

I have asthma ect and have allergies to most pets and my brother has a rabbit which starts me off rapidly. so i stay clear easy cos they are outside. my sister has a jack russell and i react to him but i find that the more i see him the less of a reaction i have but if i don't go up there for 2-3 weeks then i react worse.

Also keep an eye on his antihistamines if they seem to stop working he may need a change.I found that mine worked well and then all of a sudden last summer stopped working so gp changed them an recommended swapping them every 2 years hth

ps don't forget if all else fails ditch the hubby lol

I spent weeks in hospital once ,thinking I was dying ,turned out to be pet allergy :(
I am allergic to cat and dog dander ,now I still have dogs and manage with allergy meds BUT my cat allergy was life threatening(cat dander usually is more irritant) so they had to go :(
Even on meds my face swelled ,I broke out in hives and wheezed so much I kept getting rushed int hospital ,still now i come out in hives and have trouble breathing if I have contact wit someone who has cats.

I manage the dog allergy which isn't as serious but still pretty bad by having little/no soft furnishing.
We have leather sofas ,wooden /tile floors ,wooden blinds .
We damp dust atleast twice a week.
Dyson vacuum atleast twice a week ,every day in areas the dogs use.
And i make sure I am not closed in a room or car with them too long (cannot be avoided when we go on holls ,I always end up really ill on the journey)
I cannot be involved in grooming either ,hubby has to bath and groom them .

Lots of good advice on here and taken much of it on board as I'm a little allergic to the cats and take antihistamines.
    - If they currently sleep on the bed, a throw is useful and can be taken off at night leaving a cat-free bed.
    - I keep a clean pillowcase in the drawer to use at night instead of the one the cat's been walking on all day.
    - Wash eyes with boiled cooled water twice a day - cheaper than saline. I boil a kettle's worth & keep it in a themos once it's cooled a bit, and use flat cotton pads to bathe my eyes.

It stands for emotional freedom technique if you google you will get loads of info emofree is the one i learned from.

Its basically a series of tapping on points on the face while saying a sentence related to your issue ie allergy....i know sounds mad which is what i thought too but it worked and i know have no dog allergy don't have cats so not sure about that :D

You don't have to believe in it to work apparently and loads of vids of it on youtube to watch how its done and people being tapped lol ;)
  • I have all my life suffered with severe allergies which resulted in many hospital trips! I was planning to become a vet untill my allergies really intensified and my dr told me there would be no hope!! The past 2 and half years my doctor has been prescribing Rapitil eye drops, Nasonex nose spray and Fexofenadine Hydrochloride antihistamine tablets and 180mg twice daily.... Generally the antihistamine tablets you can buy over the counter are about 12 mg, with these i quite happily live with 2 hairy dogs and my partner owns a staff that sheds hair terrible and even when im at his im fine. I get the occasional sneeze or itchy eye but all this for me has been the only thing that has worked!
