Electricity reading - help!

I am in the process of switching from BG to Ebico but just wanted to check I was doing the right thing with my readings before going any further ....

I used to be on Economy 7 so have a meter that shows day and night readings. Am I right in assuming that to give an Electricity meter reading all I need to do is add those two figures together? Is it as simple as that?

I know it's a daft question but I had to ask!

Will Ebico contact BG on my behalf or will I need to do that and give them my final readings?

Also, does this sound about right for annual kwh for two people in a 2 bed terrace?

gas 460kwh
electric 3600kwh

No you give them to your new supplier seperately. But tell them which one is D and N. or L and N. or R1 and R2. So whatever is written next to each reading tell them this as well.

They should send them throught to Bgas for you. But keep a copy to check against your final bill.

if you have an E7 meter then you don't add the night and day readings together you give them seperatly. Because you are charged a lower rate for the night readings - so they need to know the indivual reads.

I meant to say that I am no longer on the Economy 7 tariff and haven't been for about a year now. Do I still have to give separate readings even though I am on one BG tariff for electricity now?

    Thanks again in advance
  • I do not understand this. You either have a two rate meter or you do not? If it is a single rate, then you simply give them the number from the meter. If it is two rate then give them both readings as stated above (Gal).

I have the same situation here, Chubb.
Had an agreement with Powergen to add the two figures together, but with EBICO, have to be billed as Day Rate and Night Rate, otherwise a £40 bill to change the meter.
So have opted to keep E7 and trying to maximise night use.
The gas figures you quote are the gas UNITS. They need to be converted to kWh. ( multiply by 31.61, or use the method described on the back of the invoice)
20% plus is the break even point, easily reached, and the potential to save 6pence a kWh.

Correction....Multiply by 31.61 if units are cubic feet..

Thanks for correcting me with the kwh - my annual gas consumtion sounds about right now at 14550.

I'm a bit concerned about my meter now though. British Gas told me I wouldn't need to change my meter even though I'd ditched the E7 tariff. Does that mean that if I switch I either have to give two readings to my new supplier or change my meter? Seems strange when BG didn't seem to mind!

Maybe I'll just ring Ebico and find out...

Will probably slow down your transfer a bit.
Guess they are up to their necks with new business.
My meter says "property of Eastern Electricity", so presume that the meter belongs to my present provider EBICO, and before that Powergen and before that Eastern Electricity.
What you got against E7, like I said hardly any effort to match break even point, and with the opportunity of saving 6p a kWh .Just gotta work on it.
Take my readings for example, 1500 a year 25% of which is E7....I have the choice of reducing Day Rate or transferring it to Night Rate....So can't do anything with fridge freezer, but television viewing is adjustable, so is this computer usage. Central heating pump, probably not, but could perhaps put it on earlier to stop at 7.30am and delay as long as possible putting on again. Obviously when the cold weather sets in no option.
What do other board members think, is it worth pursuing??
  • When I got gas installed and storage heaters installed, I phoned my electricity suppler (npower at the time) and told them I now have Gas heating and no longer want to be on E7. They came out and changed the meter over at no charge to me. Until the meter was changed to one with a single rate I had to give both figures when supplying a reading. I choose not to remaining on E7 as I think it was only benifical when charging storage heaters overnight. I am at home all day so find it easier to use elec as I want to rather than feel as if I have to wait till evening to put my washer on etc. just to break even or save a small amount.
