and has it saved you any money?

My Gas bill has doubled in the last year even though we have been using less units and British Gas claim to have cut prices twice in the last year.

I'm frustrated to say the least, I've been recommended to switch tariffs to websaver, but am now thinking to switch suppliers instead!!!!

I am on websaver6, I was on EnergySmart but we found that the metering and predict your bill tools, although handy, were not worth the extra money on the bills, so we switched, but we still have the energy monitor, which works no differently, we just adjusted the unit costs. I didn't switch to the cheapest supplier for me according to uSwitch which would be EDF, as the saving was very minor, approx £50 a year, and I have always been very please with BG customer service. I'm a happy customer put it that way.

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.

Your bill can't have "doubled" in a mere 12 months unless you are using more - cold winters don't help! The last price increase was July 2008, which is near two years ago. I believe you're talking about your "direct debit" doubling, not the actual bill. Could be that you have a debit balance, or that you previously had a credit balance that was being used to make your monthly payments cheaper and that credit has now been used, could be that you were previously on a price protection or fixed price product which has ended and your rates have gone up to todays rates, could be that you're on a fixed price product now and your prices haven't dropped with the price decreases (but in that case your consumption must have increased for your bill to increase, as your price per kWh is fixed), or you could have had a number of estimated meter readings which have been corrected with an actual meter reading.

Regardless, I used to use the WebSaver4, but went the other way to spinningsheep in December when my contract ended as I don't use that much fuel (I only live in a small flat) so the price differential doesn't affect me as much.

WebSaver6 basics: pay via monthly direct debit (which is good because you get a discount), get a quarterly bill as usual but through E-Mail rather than the post. You can still phone up if you have any problems, you can read your own meter if it's estimated (although I noticed meter readers still came round to read the meter now and again). I found it very easy to use and an easy way of getting a little money off my bill compared to standard tariff! It's available for gas, elec or both.

If you decide you want to switch, add up your kWh usage from your last years' bills (not the price) for either or both gas and electricity and pop them into a price comparison site and see if you can get anything better. Check what tariff you are currently on (it's printed on the bill) to get an accurate quote :)
