Options
Hi all
I have had my gas & electric prices capped since 2006.This finishes at the end of April and I have no idea of current prices for both utilities. Can anybody let me know approximate current costs so that when I check up to date prices that British gas give me I will be able to compare them.
Thank you
Kind regards Joyce:)

Go on one of the price comparison sites, put in your last years consumption (kw not £s) and see what it provides.

I think you will find you are on BG Price Protection April 2010 which started in Nov 2005(I am on the same tariff)

The prices today depend on where you live, and how you pay.

Also on that tariff the tier 1 charge was for 4572kWh gas and 900kWh electricity. BG now use 2800/500kWh and have a higher tier 1 charge.

On that tariff gas is 3.032p/kWh tier1 and 2.113p/kWh tier2

Electricty for Midlands is 11.907p/7.157p/kWh tier1/tier2.

The tier 2 prices ranged from 6.563p/kWh in East Midlands to 7.992p/kWh in S Wales

I suspect BG will attempt to put us on their highest tariff on 01 May

If you are thinking of leaving BG you need to let them know soon otherwise they could put you on a new tariff that has an exit charge.

It's likely that they'll offer another fixed price product as this is what has happened to a number of tariffs that ended at the back end of last year. I'd add up your kWh used for gas and electricity, keep them separate and make sure that they are based on accurate meter readings at each end (if your reading isn't accurate, give BG a phone call with an accurate meter reading). If you have a E7/Economy 7/two-rate electricity meter, remember to keep your "day"/"normal" and "night/"low" rates separate, don't just add up the total. Pop your figures into a comparison web site (make sure you say you're on Price Protection April 2010) - as above, do NOT use your yearly spend in £ or you won't get an accurate result :)

If you want to stay with BG, WebSaver6 means the jump to "todays rates" isn't as large as going to standard tariff. If you spot a tariff you like with another company, or you want to go to the WebSaver6 (or WebSaver7 or whatever they decide to call their discounted online tariff haha) then at the end of April (before the 30th), telephone and "opt out" of the roll over. This means that you won't be automatically locked into a new Fixed Price tariff and can either move over to WebSaver6/7/whatever or to another company without charge. :)
