    Really useful information Jasx.

Without sounding selfish - do you have any advice as to my next steps with software4students and buying the 64 bit upgrade version of Windows 7?

Doing a bit of googling it'll probably be ok,

If all the above fails you are properly licensed having vista pre-installed and you should be able to negotiate with microsoft technical support to (giving them both serial numbers, vista and win7) to get yourself activated.

My OH had XP on 64-bit and could not use his webcam, or printer and lots of software because everything was geared towards 32 bit. On the other side of the same coin, most viruses are geared towards 32-bit as well and he never had a virus problem :D

For me it was the other way round, although I had vista rather than xp.

I had problems with my printer, toshiba bluetooth dongle, graphics, etc in vista, and I have had no problems (with the same device)s since I installed win 7 64 bit. Its worked a treat for me.

the 64bit version of XP was terrible for support (drivers etc). Vista & Win7 are a lot better.

I had XP 64bit on my computer for about a day before i gave up and installed the 32bit version of XP.
