Thats correct, you have to have the card reader to set up any new payees or standing orders online.

You can transfer money between your own accounts without a card reader however

Yes you need a card reader. It has been the case for a while and I think they put a warning screen up that appeared when you logged in to Digital Banking last year.

You should opt for Payments, rather than Transfers within online banking if you're transferring to another account in your name or a friend or relatives to avoid a transfer fee.
  • Oh no that leaves me in a pickle, i ordered the reader and it takes upto 15 days:mad:

Do both accounts show on the same online banking screen? If so you can transfer without the card reader. If they are totally separate accounts then you will need the card reader if it is the first time you have set up a transfer.
They are normally pretty quick with the card readers though. I don't think I have ever waited 2 weeks for one.

    Different banking institutions

My aunt gave me 2k to invest in a bond at rate of 3% for 6months, because I’m with n&p and no branch near me, I put her cheque into a branch based bank i.e RBS, then thought I could do a simple transfer into the bond, it is only valid for 7 days otherwise bond scheme withdrawn.

    I’m pickled up now

Can I arrange the transfer/payment done over phone or do I need to go in branch, I’m doing OT at work this week so can’t travel 3 miles to my local RBS branch, and I don’t drive argh!

You can do the transfer via telephone banking if you dont have a card reader available.

If you've ordered the card reader you may very well be able to use someone else's card reader (ie any other customer of digital banking for RBS/Natwest/Nationwide who use same unit).

They aren't unique to an individual.
