Computer will not recognise SanDisk SD cards

Hi! My XP Home computer will not recognise SanDisk SD cards (4/8Gb), as soon as I click on the cards the drive disappears. I took reader and card to my repair man, who said the 8Gb card was faulty, but the camcorder used the card and I could transfer directly to computer, this time a camera recognises the 4Gb card, but the computer will not. I wanted to virus check the cards. They are SanDisk SDHC. I can read a 4Gb Transcend (non HC) card. Thanks.

Could be the reader, there are not all the same "old" reader may not read the large capacities around now. Is your pc formatted to FAT16 ?? You need FAT32 or NTFS for more than 2Gb. Your BIOS could be in need of updating as well.

I reckon your card reader is not sdhc compatible. Older (and sometimes cheaper) readers are only sd compatible.

If that's the case, the only way to fix is either only use sd cards, or buy a new reader that is compatible

It certainly won't be brands and given the sizes quoted the SDHC problem mentioned above is what gets my vote.

Thank you all, the new reader has opened the cards. It was cheap too from 7dayshop .com.
