Depends what you like doing really. Loads of walks- try Ladybower or Longshaw estate towards Surprise view. Otherwise Rother Valleys nice to stroll around0

Cusworth Hall, Sprotborough (the boat Inn by the canal, and then a boat trip at the weekend), Conisborough Castle, The Yorkshire Outlet at Doncaster. Get on the M1 north and head up the The Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The city centre has some attractions it'self - Cathedral, Millenium Galleries, Botanical Gardens, the wheel. Bishops House, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Chesterfield is a nice little market town and of course there is the church with the crooked spire.
Bakewell in derbyshire and the famous Bakewell Tart shop. Lots of diverse things to do in this neck of the woods.0 -
Meadowhall always passes a day, could always come to Doncaster racecourse if the races are on, depends what your into really. You could always be kids for the day and go ice skating or swimming, bowling, cinema etcJust me, in my own little world

If you like animals The Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster is worth a visit.
If you are after something gentle: Gardens Of South Yorkshire or something a little more exiting: Pleasure Island or a lot more exiting: Bawtry Paintball Fields
Depending where you are in Sheffield, you could probably get to Leeds or York within 45 minutes, Leeds is great for shopping and has a few museums/galleries (unlike Sheffield City Centre, Leeds is vibrant and alive, but then the White Rose centre is paltry compared to Meadowhall).
There is loads to do in York, everything from the obvious historical attractions/walks and shopping to the Dungeons and National Railway Museum. There is also a shopping outlet mall on the outskirts of York.0 -

Cusworth hall is great for an afternoon out and it's Free! But Conisbrough castle really isn't worth it (the cost or the effort to go) unless you are a real castle enthusiast.0 -
I would recommend the yorkshire mining museum (J38 of M1) where you do an underground tour, escorted by an ex-miner and his yorkshire humour - great for either gender, in my opinion.0

I agree - Yorkshire Mining Museum near Wakefield is brilliant and it's free!
You get an underground tour which takes about 45 minutes and have complete freedom to wander the sight. Tip though: make sure you get there around 10am to book your underground tour - they get booked up fast.
It has a great cafe/restaurant too - I've always found it clean and the food yummy :-)
Brodsworth Hall near Doncaster is interesting if you like old houses - if you go make sure you ask the guides loads of questions, they are very informative and far better and cheaper than the guide book you can buy!0 -
