pot holes - help with repairs

over the weekend i went over a pretty big pothole, which has cracked an alloy, scratched another, and gave me a puncture. there is no way to avoid it, as the road is so narrow it forces one car at a time through and takes up a good portion of it. how do i go about asking the council to pay for repairs? i have taken pictures of the pothole and damage to alloys/wheel and am wondering how to approach this. thanks

The normal reply is that the council are only liable if the pothole has been reported to them previously and they have failed to take action with in a reasonable time.

I'm sure it must be worth a try, plus more advise will follow,;)

So every car that goes along that road will have damaged wheels?, one of them surely must have reported it before you hit it.

On another thread I saw a link to fillthathole.org.uk to report potholes which I have done with 3 holes on the way to work. I reported them about 4 weeks ago, so far nothing! I understand that councils across the country are having to deal with more holes this spring than normal, due to the harse winter, but surely 4 weeks is plenty of time!:mad:

I would say 4 weeks is plenty of time, go out tomorrow and trash your car, or maybe like the majority, avoid them??????????????????????????

I hate the idea of pot holes, when i borrow my car to the gf, I warn her, which she doesnt like... but I said look, I just don't want problems, im not telling you how to drive, if she hits them in her car no problem, as it can take it better etc, but with big 18" wheels, and low profile tyres and hard as nails suspension it will rip through mine. and cost £500 per corner of damage, plus suspension costs.

She shuts up when I mention £1k bill per side. lol

So I say, TAKE IT EASY, look far ahead, and be prepared to slow down, and take necessary action, at the right time (not dangerously) LOOK AHEAD, FAR AHEAD... plan ahead!

Cross check website such as http://www.fillthathole.org.uk/ or http://www.potholes.co.uk/ as well as a request to the council regarding reports made directly regarding the pothole(s). You'll also need details of their regular highways inspections.

My local council does regular inspections but they ignore pretty much everything until it is reported in and will claim that they were not aware of it.

My friend trashed an alloy on a pothole, claim went in to the council, and eventually, he got a pay out (actually they ended up paying for 4x alloys and tyres as his damaged alloy was beyone repair, and the style of alloy had been discontinued)

Im very skeptical about pot hole claims.

Unless you were tailgaiting the car infront how didnt you have time to slow down? What was the speed of the road?

Your council work to tolerances. You cant expect them to monitor every metre of every road. If people dont report the potholes then it will be down to the council inspectors who will inspect on weekly, monthly, 6 monthly and yearly frequencies given the classification of the road.

If you report a pothole to my local council and its outwith safey (something like 70mm) then it will be repaired within a couple of days.

You cant expect much more than that really.

I guess it varies from council to council. Ever been to Bristol? Don't bother if you value your alloys.
