I'm sorry are you named on the tenancy agreement? Was it an Assured Shorthold Tenancy? I thought you needed to be 18 to sign an AST?

Kirstie - the others have explained to you that a Standing Order is your instruction to pay someone else and that you have to contact your bank to stop the payments. It amazes me that someone can get to University, where they are going to be living on a tight budget , and yet have no knowledge of the basic workings of their own bank account. Always check for yourself that no further payments will be made when an agreement of any sort is coming to an end - do it in writing and keep a copy.

This is exactly why personal finance needs to be taught in school. We see it all over the boards - young people not knowing they can read their utility meters and submit the readings, not knowing they need to cancel a standing order, not understanding that an airtime agreement/ AST is a legally binding fixed term contract. I have some sympathy with them; if parents and schools have not taken the time to educate it is a hell of a crash course when you get your own place. :(

We aren't having a pop at you honey, apologies if you think we are. :) It is despair at society really I suppose! It is absolutely fine to ask whatever you want, might be worth saying you are 17 at the start in the next thread? It just helps us know how much experience you are likely to have. People probably thought you were older having a car, flat and bursary.
