Private Van Insurance

Can anyone help. We have a small van that is for private use only. We bought it for our big dogs and it is used as a car in every respect. Trying to insure it is a nightmare. If it was for business use it would be easy but no one wants to do it for private and the few that do charge way over the top. You can't insure it over the internet & when you ring companies they even have been known to say they don't believe we don't use it for business! There must be others out there as we are desperate to get the cost down. Anyone got any ideas?

Unfortunately you are paying for the people who defraud insurance companies. Business use insurance is expensive due to the way the stereotypical 'white van' man tends to drive.
There have been a massive number of people in the last few years who have claimed to be using a van for personal use only, but are actually using it for business. Many insurance companies will not touch vans due to the fraud which tends to happen.
When I was a broker, people were often amazed at the cheap business policies which were available. If you are in a position where you could use the van for work (self employed or sub-contracting etc) try getting a quote for business use. Some high street brokers will mirror your existing no claims bonus for new policies ... I seem to remember that small vans would be between £150-£200 a year.

I used to work in motor claims (many years ago) and knowing the lengths some companies go to in order to ensure that they don't pay out, I'm surprised anyone manages to fiddle them! We are both employed, so I don't know that we can insure it as commercial use, but it is mad that we are paying twice what you have said and yet are less likely to have an accident than a commercial user. It is so frustrating! To the reply that may be able to help with a quote...yes please, if this is allowed!!0
