Even better deal than Martin recommends for vehicle recovery

The one Martin recommends is a 'you pay upfront and get reimbursed' deal including homestart which I think he says starts at about 32 (lots cheaper than AA or RAC)

I just secured something even nicer from Green Flag, collecting a few offers.

1. Sign up through quidco for £20 discount
2. Get the GF 15% sign up online discount
3. Get GF's current offer of free homestart.

So I now have a year's cover including homestart for £24 after I get the cashback (which has tracked already).

One note - I had to use explorer 6 to download the GF quotation form - it wouldn't display on either explorer 7 beta or firefox.

    thats a good deal.

but to ascertain whether its better than Autoaid - does it cover taking you to any location in the UK or accomodation provision etc? Cover spouse? Cover any car you are sitting in at time of incident?

    Just curious.

No, it isn't as comprehensive as Auto Aid, but has the advantage that you don't have to pay upfront.

You might be able to get the GF even cheaper than I did, because the car I've covered is an L reg.

Wow, thanks for this, was thinking of using my Tesco Deals to sign up for the RAC before going away in the car at the end of the month. But I've signed for GF now, after reading this.

    Premium £30.45 (V reg vehicle)
    Free homestart
    15% discount
    £20.00 back on Quidco

Paid for with Tesco Credit Card.

In all it will cost less than a tenner!!!

    Fantastic!!

I signed up for the recovery plus service last week for £74.55 which includes recovery to any UK destination and homestart.
I also had the quidco £20 tracked the day after, I'm very happy with the level of cover I have for £54.55 , some good features are up to £175 for emergency repairs following a break in or attempted break in , up to £800 towards car hire costs following a incident to your car within 7 days of an arranged departure ( could be a life saver if your car broke down a few days before a holiday ) , if you go camping and your tent is accidently damaged they will hire a replacement or pay bed and breakfast fees up to £150 per person , £10 if they don't get to you within 1 hour , legal protection and best of all IMO is I don't have to pay and reclaim any breakdown costs.

I have had a very swift opportunity to try this service, breaking down two days after having paid the premium and one day after the premium started.

I was slightly embarrassed as I thought it might look as though I had taken out the policy on a car already broken, especially as the car is right outside my house, but GF didn't mention the fact that cover had only started the previous day.

They took about 10 minutes to answer the phone (RAC used to be instant when I was a member), but promised a repair truck within an hour on a Sunday night. Arrived about 50 minutes later. Helpful guy, made a thorough check and said the alternator is dead - I have to call GF tomorrow and they will tow the car to a garage free, within a 10 mile radius.

Amazing value from GF, although whether it's worth repairing the car is another matter...

OK, an update on Green Flag which is not too good as it cost me more money than I saved.

My regular garage is 12-13 miles from home and GF covers you for 10 mile tow. I asked GF if I could pay for the extra 2-3 miles, they said yes it would be £4 - 6. So I booked in at the garage, and GF recovery (a subcontrator) turned up and asked me for £24+. As I needed the car swiftly and it was booked in at the garage I stumped up. Received the invoice yesterday and GF company had charged me for 15 extra miles as they charge for their return journey back to their depot and for taking a long route to the garage.

Worse, following GF mechanic's advice I asked my regular garage to order and fit an alternator. They did this, the new alternator did not work and so they investigated further and it transpired that the problem was a cable leading to the alternator. Most likely there was no problem with the altenator.

Saving from switching to GF from RAC (always reliable and thorough in my experience) was £60.

Cost of switching to GF from RAC: alternator £55 exc labour and vat, overcharge for towing £20.

    O dear.

No, it means that in sucessful enquiries on missing transactions they'll pay out 50%. That's 1 out of 2 people not 50% of the cashback
