Just been given some variagated privet, not sure how to position them for best coverage, I would realy like to block out as much of the neighbours garden as possible. There are six plants in all....

Is it right that these things can grow 8'-10' high and up to 8' across?

Yes it can grow to these sizes, if you let it. Golden variegated is such a lovely hedge to grow and can act as a bright yet effective privacy barrier. How far your six plants will go depends on how large they are and the length of barrier you want to establish.
It will need to be clipped at least three times through the year, although if you are like me and have a resident Blackie nesting within sitting on 3 eggs the clipping might only be done after her and her babies are gone. The good thing is your hedge will establish very quickly.

    Excelent...:D

    Are they fairly hardy?
I have to dig over the border, move all my other shrubs (5 of), and remove the couch grass. I wont be able to start planting them untill tomorrow afternoon probably, they aren't potted but they have a fair bit of soil around the root balls, and have been bagged. They are about 1m-1.5m at the moment, the fence is about 35 foot long so there should be more than enough plants to cover the length of the fence thanks.
Plenty of good bark mulch should keep the couch down untill they establish properly.........

They are very hardy, and grow nice and fast. When you put them in give them a good water at the root ball before filling in, you will have an established hedge before you know it.
