Hoping for a bit of advice on my chilli seedlings. After what seemed like ages 3 of the 5 chilli seeds I planted germinated. Now well over a week later one of the seedlings has nice big leaves (first set) but the other two are just a stem (about 15mm high) with the seed stuck at the top with no sign of the leaves getting out. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to encourage the leaves to pop out of the seed?
Cheers for any help.

its normal - leave them to it, the leaves will emerge from inside the seed casing soon enough! Often some seeds are much further ahead than others with chillies - whereas generally, things like toms seem to be more synchronised!0

Thanks for your help. Yeah I was expecting them to all be syncronised as you say! I guess I'll just have to be more patient!

try not to fiddle about with it, pulling the seed casing off etc - it will do it itself when its ready amd you are likely to damge the seedling!0

Thanks again, I wont be touching them. Haven't so far either. I was just worried that they would die without the leaves getting any sunlight or whatever. Glad to hear its all normal.

Ive been told that when the seed caseing is still on the leaves its due to the fact that the plant isnt getting enough light, i took that advice and moved my seedling to the south facing window ledge and now ive got lovley dark green leaves

Yep, I've almost always found that it's better not to mess with the seed casing, I have had to now and again, when it just won't come off, but it's unusual if I do.foreign_correspondent wrote: »try not to fiddle about with it, pulling the seed casing off etc - it will do it itself when its ready amd you are likely to damge the seedling!Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
DW planted some seeds I'd dried last year.
She didn't know how many to plant, so planted loads in the pot (think watercress/corriander!). After a few weeks we had a 5 inch wide pot with about 100 shoots in!
We've separted a selection into individual trays, and hopefully some of them will take. If they all do we'll have to go into business selling chillies!
