I just put some veg peelings in my compost bim, and there was loads of ants in it. Is this ok, or do I need to get rid of them somehow? I'm pretty new to composting and not sure if this is normal or not

It's nice and warm in there, and can make a great home for ants. A few won't do any harm, may even help with their tunnelling etc. but I don't think having a nest is very pleasant, especially if they bite.

Is it a bit on the dry side perhaps? Throw a bucket of water in, and if you keep moving the contents, they will move on.

I did read somewhere that if you put down some dried semolina, the workers take it back to the nest and feed it to the queen, who swells up and goes pop! Now whether that was just something and nothing, I don't know, but it would make the nest disperse LOL.
