Spray painting composite door

Ok,
So the OH has her "perfect" colour in mind for a new door - french grey. But, a good quality wooden door is coming in ~2K; a bit pricey.
So the option of a composite door has come up, I thought you could only get them in certain colours (and that they weren't painted par se but rather that actual colour). But one salesman suggested they could actually spray paint a composite door to our desired colour.
Has anyone heard of this? Or done this? Any expereinces?
I was a little concerned that this kind of defeats some of the purpose and that it could peal etc...
