A little more information courtesy of The Guardian:

"In the first such scheme, the UK's biggest grocer is to offer its customers one Clubcard point for every carrier bag they do not use. Clubcard points are usually awarded at a rate of one for each £1 spent.

From September, all Tesco's carrier bags will also be degradable and a new thicker and bigger bag will also be introduced, so that shoppers need less of them and are more likely to re-use them.

The new Tesco scheme to encourage shoppers to bring their own bags starts on August 14 with TV adverts to spell out how the scheme will work. A host of celebrities, including Martine McCutcheon, Paul Daniels, Ronnie Corbett, Alan Titchmarsh and Frankie Dettori have been signed up to front the adverts.

Under the terms of the scheme, all shoppers who bring in their own holdalls or trolleys, or who re-use carrier bags they have received on previous visits or from rival stores, will qualify so long as they have a Tesco Clubcard. There are currently 13m active Clubcard accounts.

Checkout staff will assess how many bags each shopper is saving and agree a number of points to be awarded. The points accumulated for re-using bags will be highlighted on Clubcard statements as "green points".

How are they going to assess how many bags we DON'T use?? Are they going to pack and then unpack to make sure we don't cheat, or what if the Checkout person has had a bad day and she reckons we only need 1????

I'm all for it as I use my trolley, but can't see how this is going to work, unless they assume so many items go in a bag and the till works it out??

hi.. elsiebutt65..... i can see yuor point. but hayho.....lets not nit pick this one.at the end of the day..its points that we never got before....
and all i can say is make sure you have carrier bags in the car at ALL times... for those impordo...visits to tescos....

if we go by surfsisters info an average of 1 point per £1. spend..on average i spend £60. per week( so thats an extra 60 points a week ) £ 3120 a year.... so if i got this right thats an extra £31.20 which works out at £124.80 in deals....
can some claify if this is right or wrong please....

so basically then their are ging you double points for taking yuor own bags...

hope i got the git of it ..if not sorry for this post...

I got the letter from Tezza today also - complete with the 3 free vouchers :T - better than nothing, (but you have to claim them before 1/10/06) AND the letter was on 'paper sourced from sustainable forests' - trying hard to show how Green they are!:D

I was going to post this myself this morning but I just couldn't get my head around how to start a new thread, then this one was posted!:p
