Hi, just wondering if anyone can explain the following to me....
My brother started a job in january and has been on tax code 647L WK1.....is this the tax code that he should be on? he has spoken to his employer and they say it is correct? but from what i read on the internet it is an emergency code?
Thanks in advance.

Technically, Emergency Code is BR......
Given the new tax year started today he will have a new tax code anyway.
He should get a P60 sometime in the near future, when he gets that, if he posts the figures, we can tell you if he is entitled for refund in tax or not.0 -

No it isn't. BR is the basic rate tax code. BR code would be used if no P45 was handed in or no P46 was filled in. It would also be used if a P46 was handed in and Box C was ticked.
The emergency tax code is 647L Having a Wk/Mth 1 suffix means that the personal allowance is being given but what has happened over the rest of the tax year has not been taken into account. This could mean that you are owed tax or indeed that you owe tax.

ok brilliant, thanks for the replies. I'm guessing maybe because he was self-employed up until january it could play a part?
Will tell him to check his P60 first when it arrives.0 -
