Amex Platinum Cashback Application Rejected

  • Interesting development, just popped into my bank to reduce my overdraft limit as suggested by Experian and learned that I am preselected for a Barclaycard Platinum which has their Freedom reward system - if my Amex appeal falls through it's nice to have that as a back up I guess.
  • I'd go straight to Barclays and organise a card via them. You may be able to get 1% Cashback with Barclaycard Freedom with some of their products.

Nice to be right some of the time:beer:
  • Yep indeed, thanks for your help. Still (maybe hopelessly) holding out for Amex as the reward is greater, from what I've read on here Barclaycard Freedom isn't great. But for building my credit rating the Barclaycard should do, great if I can get the 1% cashback too.

I have excellent credit history and yet Amex computer said noooo! :)

I did get the Lloyds Airmiles (Amex & MC), but they probably have lower criteria.

So now I collect airmiles instead of cashback!!

BTW Barclays Freedom is not brilliant (actually, it's really bad) unless you spend lots of money in restaurants.

In my case, I'll get a free coffee at Pret after I spend £200 with them!! It's like buy-100-coffees-get-one-free deal!

I was offered Barclaycard Freedom by Shell (I think) after their Citi Card deal ended and they seem to be one of the (only?) fuel stations accepting it.

I felt I was better sticking with my Leeds Building Society (Barclaycard in disguise) 0.5% cashback card.
  • Hi, I also got rejected by amex as well. I don't have a personal credit card but I do have a Corporate Credit Card which is Amex as well. And I think I have a good credit rating and I own my own house so I just don't understand why they would reject me. Do you think its any use to appeal their decision?

I don't understand why you all want AMEX card when it is not widely accepted in UK and some places in Europe?? It is all about bloody status.

It is widely accepted in the UK. I also think it is not about status as you suggest, rather the cashback offered which I believe beats all others hands down.

I agree the cashback offered with AMEX Platinum is the best in the market - however i disagree AMEX is widely accepted in the UK. Some well known retailers do not accept AMEX. AMEX are less accepted than VISA/Mastercard...mainly due to their higher merchant fees in transactions.

Aye, I agree there are some retailers that do not accept AMEX, but more that do than don't so whilst it is not universally accepted I would go with 'widely' accepted. I would imagine most users have another credit/debit card they carry in case AMEX isn't accepted. I still think most users of this card on MSE are only interested in the money :jrather than the status.
