fixing a rattly letterbox

At some point in the last month my letterbox broke and now it rattles whenever it is windy (i.e. most of the time). Is this easy to fix? Can it be done for free using handy household items? Will I have to give in and buy a new one and find someone to fit it?

If anyone has read any of my previous DIY/car/house/garden threads they will be aware how incompetent I am in [STRIKE]this[/STRIKE] these areas.

    Part of the Furniture
What sort of door is it fitted in?

My letterbox kept rattling in the wind, I ordered a new one online from these people: http://www.handlestore.com/letter-boxes.php . Came the next day, to fit it just undo screws on old one and replace with new one...

Could it just be rattling because the spring that used to keep it firmly closed has broken? If so try something like this.

I think it is just a spring thing. Thanks for that link, I had no idea you could just buy the spring on its own. Are they likely to come with fitting instructions?

If the spring is still there but worn, you could tuck a piece of cardboard under one of the lugs making the spring mechanism tighter. This way it won't cost anything and gives you plenty of time to source a replacement spring in your own time, should you wish too even.
