oh yuck.. i think there is a bird in my chimney

i like birds, but i can hear a lot of scuffling and rustling in my fireplace (totally blocked up, wallpapered over, etc)

i have a small outside hatch which i opened but it is blocked with rubble and has asbestos lining so i am not messing with that... i guess i just have to hope it dies quickly??

eeeeew... not pleasant... poor thing..

I had a huge jackdaw at the bottom of mine a couple of weeks back. Could only see his enormous beak as only a small space at top of fireback. I shone torch up chimney and he managed to fly back up.

    Poor thing.

If you dont use that chimney, have a sweep or builder put a cap on it and that will stop this happening again.

Until you/or a chimney sweep removes the nest. It can cause a damp issue within the chimney flue - then fit the cowl. Hope this helps.

Wont the house start smelling if there is a bird decomposing at the bottom of the chimney?? You might have to remove the cover anyway, so could be just as well off removing it while it is still alive.

You'll know if it dies in there as your room will soon full of horrible flies.
  • Two starlings came down my chimney, presumably whilst fighting - we could hear the racket behind the fire. Shortly after, they both came out through the gas fire into the room. I was absolutely mortified and what a mess to clean up when OH finally got them out!
