Laptop disconnecting my network and connecting to neighbours!!!

Hi

Im wondering if anyone can help me, since the other day my laptop has been kicking me off my network and connecting to my neighbours.

Ive had my network set up for a week now and only this weekend just gone realised that it was open, so I set up password etc and ever since my laptop keeps disconnecting it and connecting to the neighbours open network.

Ive deleted their network on my computer, changed settings so it doesnt automatically connect but yet it just comes back and after 30 minutes on my own network it kicks me off and automatically connects to theirs.

Im hoping its nextdoors network as im going to nip round later and tell her, but I still need it to stop disconnecting mine and going for someone elses.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Nothing to do with your neighbours network, its your own settings.

What version of windows are you using, and are you using the built in windows app to connect to wireless networks, or a 3rd party program?

Disconnect from yours (or your neighbours) wireless network. Go to advanced settings for your wireless network and remove all profiles you find from the list (you should see your own network profile and your neighbours plus any others you have connected to previously).

Now re-connect to your own wireless network, enter your password and all should be fine.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

    kind regards

I know it has nothing to do with the neighbours but if their network wasnt open my laptop wouldnt be able to get onto it and it would be safer for the neighbours not having an open network too.

Im using Vista and its the standard windows connect to a network that I use.

Your laptop would not be able to connect to their network if you had configured it correctly!

Well ive never had a problem with any of my other networks ive used until now, I seem to have solved the problem now though.

I dont appreciate your comment, I was asking for suggestions to help solve the problem not people telling me ive done it wrong, I think its pretty much a no brainer considering im on here asking for help in the first place!

So do tell us exactly what you have done to resolve your problem then?

I run the network router disc again and re deleted all the other networks, seems to have worked as it will now only find mine.

You should configure your laptop correctly by doing the following:

Right click on your wireless network icon, View available wireless networks, Change advanced settings, Wireless networks, Highlight your network (SSID), Properties, Connection. Check "Connect when this network is in range". Click OK, Advanced, Make sure "Access Point (Infrastructure) Networks only" is selected, and "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks" is unchecked.
