Student bank accounts

  • I have two beautiful daughters both now graduated. One banked with Natwest and all went well and one banked with HSBC which ALSO went well. It might have helped that I had third party authority on both accounts so if any small difficulties Mum could go into the local home branch and get help. HSBC were in fact the better for this! I myself do not bank with either of these banks but have ended up on first name terms with senior staff at both!! I think the issue of which has a branch nearby is important but ALSO try to get into a branch and see what their attitude to you is. If they are uninterested, it figures they will be even less so once they have you established as a customer. Personally I recommend Royal Bank of Scotland. Always found them to be very human and deal with errors quickly! Most important. Good luck.

Even living 5 minutes from the on campus branch of NatWest, my son failed to pay a cheque he'd been sent into his student account - 'lost' it, found it while packing, waited until he was home and had to make a special trip to the bank with it! :rotfl:

Does anyone know which CRA Halifax uses ? I opened a savers account last year and they used experian but on the main page it says equifax.
  • My daughter's about to start uni (providing all goes well on results day!) and your posts have been very helpful in establishing the criteria for choosing the best student account. Does anyone have any idea when the details of the best accounts for the forthcoming academic year might be available here? As a newcomer to this site any other advice on this topic for either parent or student would be much appreciated.

Not sure when it's coming: I suspect the banks haven't all finalised their offerings. See here and if you're not already signed up for the weekly emails, that's the thing to do!

  • Many thanks Savvy_Sue, I shall just have to be patient I suppose!
  • The Halifax/HBoS student accounts looks good in terms of the amount of the overdraft (up to £2,750) which I gather exceeds the offerings of the others. Any views on this or anything I might have missed.

    Thanks

  • Hi, I have had one student account since sept '04 and now want another one. I'll be receiving a bursary and also a student loan this year, so could have regular payments to each of the accounts. Do you think I could obtain 2 accounts? Also, I have quite a bad credit rating so I'm wondering if the student account credit threshold is lower than a normal bank account? Anyone know? Thanks.:o
  • I guess that probably depends on whether you tell the second one about the first! It is absolutely LEGAL to have 2 but some banks choose as their personal policy not to offer a second if you already have one elsewhere. As it is legal I don't think you are under any obligation to offer that information. Of course if your bursary is big enough you'd do even better putting that into an A&L account and getting max interest. Good luck.:T
