We have a problem with cats - not only with them pooing and peeing everywhere in the garden, fighting on the skylight or digging up plants they also attack our dog.

She's not very big (border terrier) and the cats hide in bushes and jump out at her, she didnt used to mind cats but since one almost took out her eye she's taken umbridge! and she's pretty territorial now. She's almost 'had' one in the past, but we're worried that a cat will hurt her badly.

We've tried the water pistol route and those spikes which you put on the wall. We've now bought some cat repleant 'gunk' which we are about to try - fingers crossed!

I always found the Growing Success cat repellent worked for us.

It's a mixture of garlic and lemon I think and certainly works on the beds. Not sure if it would work on slate chips or gravel but must be worth a go.

I got it at my local garden centre (Wyevale). It certainly worked for my cats on the veg beds, but I can't remember how long it lasts when it rains etc.

The other thing I was wondering was whether lemon essential oil or citronella sprinkled liberally around might work. You can get quite big bottles of the stuff on ebay. Have you ever tried them with anything citrus to see what they make of it?

That combined with giving them a lovely sandy litter box in an inconspicuous corner of the garden might work. Given the choice between the rough slate that smells of lemon and garlic or soft sweet sand against their paws (perhaps with an appropriately placed 'poo' in there so they have their smell), they might opt for the sand box.

They're obviously going back to the same spots out of habit - maybe they are still smelling remnants of their urine etc in these areas regardless of what you put down over the top.

Hi thanks for the reply. It is our younger cat as caught him twice now grr!

Well we have used so far:
    Orange peelings
    lemon peelings
    Citronella
    Tea tree oil
some gel stuff we got from garden centre
    None of them have worked!

They have a box in the garden with soil in which worked for a few days now back to this, the area was fully dug out for the slate so although there may be a slight smell there im not sure what else we can do.

Have put down some old sticks across the slate which has worked so far..prob is we have spent a fortune just redoing it all and currently looks rubbish now with it covered in old sticks!

will see if that stuff works thanks x
  • What about a sonic cat reppeller I have one in my back garden and its stopped the cats using my veggie patch as a toilet for the last three years (as its close to the house I use an electric plug extension (you buy it with the sonic one) but local teenagers dont like it (mine say it annoys them when they are working out in the garden) or you can use 9 volt batterys in it and move them around the garden - I got mine from Robert Dyas for £19.99 (about 3 years ago) - only problem is that I've now just got a little kitten so will have to switch it off!! Will let you know what works best the sonic repeller or another cat!!!!
2010 has got to be better than the last two years!! :rotfl:

Weight loss to date: 3 Stone & 5lbs!! Weight loss this week: 2 lbs !!:j

I put some CDs on string on my obelisk as a bird scarer and I haven't had any cat poo in the garden since. Could be a coincidence?

    Have tried this:
    http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/scent-off-gel/
and for the first time for weeks my new neighbour's cats have not gone in my garden:j, last time was Monday and they were both 'going' twice a day.
Flower beds were one thing but not in my food......they dug up my newly planted spuds and went there:mad:

I did get 2 bottles and covered all areas that they went in and everywhere that they hadn't been yet, bit overkill but wanted to make sure it stopped.

    Worth a try @ £1;)
