Selling food at a car boot sale

Hi,
just after some advice please on one issue of having a stall at a car boot sale.
My sister and I are thinking of selling handmade craft items and plants, which we know won't give us a great profit margin but as these are our hobbies anyway we thought we might be able to raise enough to cover our costs IYSWIM.
Anyway my question is: can we also sell home made cakes, or are we bound by any health and safety regulations that would hold us personally liable if we made anyone ill with our cooking ? Do we need a permit to sell them ?
Thanks in advance.
Linda

Food Safety Act - There are very specific rules relating to the labelling, composition and hygiene standards pertaining to the preperation and handling of the food and failure to comply with them can result in extremely high fines. If you sell or prepare food you can obtain advice and leaflets from the Environmental Health Deprtment at your local Council.

of course you would be liable,in the food industry an individual can be held responsible, even as an employee0 -
Indeed - and Environmental Health do check car boot sales regularly - my aunt used to make jams/chutnies and pickles to raise money for her local playgroup, but was then told that she would need to have her kitchen registered and annually inspected.
She gave up after that. Why does nobody say Thank You anymore??:mad:Debt Free as of September 2011 :jSealed Pot 2009 number 334 - £100 Saved! yey!!Sealed Pot 2010 number 334 - £116.51 Saved! Yey!! YIPPEE!!0 -
Contact your environmental health and ask them what you need to do. You will also need to register with the HMRC as a business0

Thanks for your quick replies. Think we'll stick to selling handmade cards and toy boxes, and eat the carrot cake ourselves!
