Thank you again for all your thoughts. I am going to give the vet a ring in the morning and she what he says. He is a really wonderful and caring vet and if he says that he thinks it is time then I will have to go with it. Thanks for telling me about the vet coming to the house - this may be better for Angus, although I still can't bear to think about it. People say that when you lose a dog you should get another one but that just feels like I am being disloyal to Angus - do you know what I mean?Jane

I know what you mean, but there is a poem that i'm sure someone will find written from the dog who passes on & it's done as his will & he says he leaves his bed & his toy etc for another dog, it's on these pages but someone will know it & post it i'm sure. You wouldn't be disloyal to him, if you got a rescue (& i'm not saying you should or will) then you'd be homing it & giving a home to another dog & i'm sure they won't ever replace Angus. When the time comes to get another you'll know, do what is right for you. You may go through a period of not even being able to think of another dog but in time things get easier.
I so hope he'll be ok but i'm thinking of you & be guided by your vet & instinct, 14 is a good age & i'm sure he's had a wonderful life with you, as a dog owner you really have my thoughts with you x0 -
We have always had a vet to the house for our dogs. I couldnt bear to leave them in a vets surgery. We have always buried ours in the garden. Of course for a small dog its easier to dig a sufficient grave than a huge dog - which my OH has also had to do in the past, crying as he did it

If you lay the favourite blanket, quilt or whatever on your sofa for your boy then the vet will usually give him a small dose to calm him first before the real injection. They just fall asleep. And yes, you will cry buckets and your heart will feel like its bursting out of your chest but do try not to cry or make loud noises as he goes to sleep, just keep comforting him with his favourite words or songs.

This is a very sad thread. I hope the OP gets through this ok.
I'm not sure how I will cope when Mill's time comes (thankfully he is only 8.5 and healthy). In the meantime I am doing my best to make sure he gets the best possible life that I can give him.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -
Not the one the OP was talking about but very moving all the same.I have had to have two wonderful dogs pts and the loss hurts like hell but
Better that you hurt because you care enough to let a suffering dog go,than they hurt because you didn't care enough.
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this--the last battle--can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
Don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Here it is.............
The Legacy
When humans die, they make a will
To leave their homes and all they have
To those they love.
I, too, would make a will if I could write.
To some poor wistful, lonely stray
I leave my happy home.
My dish, my cosy bed, my cushioned chair, my toy.
The well loved lap, the gentle stroking hand,
The loving voice.
The place I made in someone's heart.
The love that at last could help me to
A peaceful, painless end,
Held in loving arms.
If I should die, Oh do not say,
"No more a pet I'll have,
To grieve me by it's loss"
Seek out some lonely, unloved dog
And give my place to him.
This is the legacy I leave behind -
Tis all I have to give.

You should get another if there is space in your heart and your life, but not if you do not feel ready. You can never replace a dog, cat, child but you do have the capacity to love more than one, either at the same time or one after another. You can either allow yourself to feel guilt and disloyalty or you can realise that adopting a rescue could makes something wonderful come out of something terribly sad. You are not a bad person or bad owner if you cannot cope with his illness any longer. He isn't going to get any better and his quality of life, and your quality of relationship with him, isn't going to improve. When YOU feel it's time, it's time.0
