Hi Mambury, how are you feeling now hun?

Poor DD - she gets fears about things and they really grip her. its quite often a texture thing like sand, snow, grass etc. but right now it has become bees, flies, butterflies etc.
DH took them out for a walk that they did and loved in the hols but they returned really quickly and DH said she was absolutley distraught. DS was of course miffed but at least he gets the reaasurance that we take their fears seriously and don't rubbish them.
now he has taken them to the supermarket and I heard her crying and squealing just on the way to the car.
She will get over it but its a shame as she loves being outside so much.“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

Jo - I can completely sympathise as DD1 is going through exactly the same thing atm. Any bugs, flies, the lot, huge great big screaming fits like the boogie monster is chasing her. We got over the sand and the snow eventually, but this is getting silly, especially with the amount about this time of year. Let me know if you find a solution! She won't even play on her slide anymore because there was an ant on itturn £100 into £10000 in 2010 member #16 £567.68/£10,000 -I'm a wiggly worm, I'm a wiggly worm, how do you do, I love you, I'm wiggly worm!0

I have always found that trying to reason away the fear doesn't work. that accepting it and her makes her feel safer and gives her the security to get through it. if she thinks we are trying to persuade her to do something she is scared of then she stays stuck in being afraid mode and can't move on.
may be really validate that you understand and she is ok -not necessarily verbally but in actions. like hey you don't want to go out cos of the flies but you don't want to miss out on the fun lets have an inside picnic or make a pretend beach or do some inside planting.
children process their way through these things if they feel safe. and yes its sunny and being outside is easier than in with kids but its only a small amount of time in the big scheme of things.
DD really has sensory issues I think and so many things fluttering around her is really overwhelming her right now.

not that I have done an indoor beach here yet. but a friend of mine who is a child minder has done it. she puts a great big cut out yellow sun on the wall and some yellow sheet on the floor and other bits and pieces and they read seaside-y books. great fun.“Don’t ask what the world needs. did it take your dd long to get over the sand and snow?
we took dd to local beach last feb half term and she wouldn't even stand down with shoes on. by june she was lying down and allowing herself to be buried. hehe.
Water has been her biggest fear since she was tiny baby but she is over that now. when she was little she cried if water dripped out of her sippy bottle and touched her fingers. she absolutely hated it. at bathtime she would make herself sick screaming so much. we had a prolonged period of sponging down type baths and haircleaning. very gradually she cam e to enjoy puting her hands in water when we played outside. to clean them. then playing with toys in the sink etc till finally she started having proper baths last year and now loves them and last july she paddled in lake windermere up to her waist. that was amazing to see. she even took her crocs of and went in barefoot.
I really doubted myself for a long time wondering if I was abd mum for not forcing baths and stuff but now I'm glad I didn't“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”
