Need to amend mortgage

Hello

I don't know if anyone will be able to answer this one (or even if i'm in the right place) but here goes nothing

Myself and my GF bought a house 5 years ago. We have been working for the last 18 months to clear off all unsecured debt (hers 13k now cleared mine 19k 4500 left..and hoping to clear that by xmas)

Anyhow we then planned to start paying triple mortgage payments to try and kill that off

Ok here is the interesting bit (or not) when we took the mortgage I had just started a new job, and they would not lend in my name. As her earnings were enough alone to get the mortgage we took it, as didn't want to miss the house we had lined up as it was a bargain.

5 years on and the mortgage is still in my partners name, and we want to just put it in joint names. We contacted Northen Rock and explained, but they said that it isn't that simple, and want us to start from scratch again (solicitors fees, surveys etc on the house) Surley there is an easier/cheaper way.

We are planned to marry next year, would that sort our finacial situation liablity out then? as at the moment everything is in my partners name, and although we are still very happy and in love, people who know our situation say we should really get it sorted.

Anyhow thanks for reading :)

There is a fee you need to pay to get the mortgage docs amended.

However as you are saying you want to marry next year why not wait until then? If you are on a fixed deal you might want to look elsewhere anyway to remortgage, depending on how long your deal is still running??

When you remortgage with another lender you can then put yourself as well on the mortgage and saved yourself the fee (of getting the docs amended).

I take it you are not on the deeds either? That is more important to be actually on the mortgage even though you are paying towards it. Because without, your GF is the 100% owner of the property, not you.

look and see when your "cheap initial interest rate" period expires on the mortgage, and if it has expired already, go to a good broker and re-mortage with someone else in both names - you will probably get a cheaper rate/deal. if you dont have a good broker i can recommend one.
