Want Something Different...

The missus and I want to do something different. We're in our late 20's and have done all of the normal beach holidays - Spain, Majorca, Cyprus etc. We more after an adventurous holiday rather than a relaxing one as we prefer seeing the sights rather than laying in the beach.

So I'm just after a few recommendations really. We can go pretty much anytime and want to go away for around 7 nights. The missus will only have a nice hotel so it needs to be 4 star or above. We've also looked at cruises and wouldn't rule this out but it would have to be a decent cabin.

Budget is around £300-1000 each.

You need to be a bit more specific there are countless options as diverse as city breaks (galleries, museums cafe culture etc), outdoor pursuits (anything from white water rafting, to summer glacier skiing in the alps), walking holidays, hisotical sightseeing etc etc etc. narrow down your criteria and preferred locations and you might get a bit more advice.

We are booked on a 15 day holiday to Egypt with Explore! which we hope will be an adventure, not a holiday. It includes a 6 night Nile cruise, overnight train journey, camel & donkey transport. They have lots and lots of tours, worth a look I would say.

We went to Switzerland last year for just under a week. The Bernese Overland offers some amazing scenery, and if you go in summer you get the bonus of goregous weather down in the valleys or you venture up the mountains and get snow. There are cable car routes taking you to a variety of peaks, and an absolute must is the Jungfraubahn taking you to Europe's highest railway station. There's lovely walking, lake cruises, Bern itself is a beautiful city, or a couple of hours by train and you can do Geneva.
Or the Italian Lakes is another option. I've done Lake Garda which is gorgeous in itself but within easy reach (a day trip) you can get to Venice, Verona, Florence, Milan or into the Dolomites.
Wherever you go just remember that the budget gets eaten into more quickly if you're going out and about each day rather than just lying on a beach. Look into local passes for transport etc

    Don't laugh....

    But I would say Iceland.

I went with my girlfriend just before Christmas last year and it was amazing! We saw the stunning Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), went horse riding through the Lava fields, went Dog-sledging, ate some weird and wonderful things and we also went swimming in the Blue Lagoon, which was stunning.

If you want something different then I would highly recommend Iceland. A fantastic experience and one I'll never forget.
