Flies in compost?

I potted up some spring onions a month ago using some multipurpose compost I had in the greenhouse from last year. It now seems that is it covered in flies. Could there have been flies eggs laid in it last year, and if so, how can I get rid of any other eggs in the rest of the compost before I use it, or can I not?

I don't know where the flies come from but this is very common in compost that's too damp. They won't cause any damage to your spring onions.

There are those flys that live in houseplants or greenhouses. may be worth sticking the trays ourside for a while each day (only if weather is good enough of course) as they tend to like damp warm atmospheres so a bit of breeze and drying out the compost will hopefully move them on.
But other poster is right they shouldn't do any harm to the onions, just annoying.
I would use the rest of the compost, these fly come along on damp compost all the time and it may not be the stuff you already have thats got anything wrong with it.
