How do you find out who owns the land

I am looking to buy some land in my area. There sems to be lots of overgrown fields etc, but I cannot find out who owns these pieces of land. Have tried contacting local farmers etc but they can shed no light on who is the owner.
Any suggestions how to find out?????

Land registry, can go on their website, pay for the plans, costs about £3 per enquiry, get sent details and a plan of extent.0

Fields are left overgrown for a variety of reasons.
Why have you suddenly decided you want to grow potatoes ...? .... because you can't just buy up random fields and hope to build a house on the land.
All pieces of land are defined as being of a particular sort.... random fields tend to be agricultural land or pastureland, neither of which are building land.0 -
