How to unlock access to external hard drive?

Hi -

I was messing around with the security settings for a partition on my hard drive, trying to put a password on it so users other than my own couldn't access it, when I accidentally changed the security permissions so that no user could access it, and now I can't access it or change the settings, it says 'you do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings'.

Does anyone know how I can change the settings back to have they initially were?

Thank you

Are you talking about the NTFS permissions? Can you take a screen shot of the area you were in?

If it's the NTFS permission go there (this is for Windows 7. You need to tell us your OS as it's slightly different for XP) and take ownership of the drive. That should fix it.

Click on edit and highlight the currently logged on user, tick the Replace owner box and then OK and you'll take back ownership of the folder/files.
