Look at the Processes tab under Task Manager, and you'll see what's running in the background, even though you have no applications running. You can sort these by their memory usage or CPU usage by clicking the column headers
Also look at your system tray on the Taskbar. These icons are all running processes.0 -
Dont need my pc correcting....just need to know whats running at any one time.0

Wouldn't the task manager just tell you this?
You should check also that the thing that's slowing down your PC isn't something like memory broken down or something like that. GPU could be broken or anything like that.

Is there any software that will inform you as to if it's necessary to have running what you have running ? Task Manager shows that I have 75 processes running. Some are obvious (ie. taskmgr, firefox) as I know that I've got those applications open. Some may be essential and need to be up and running for the PC to work whereas others may be automatically loaded and not be essential, for example, I can see a DivX updater executable running although it isn't taking much in resources. So, is there software that will show the bare minium that a PC needs to run and connect to internet and then I can start/shut down the other programs as and when I need them ?0

google the names of the other 70 or so processes, and there'll be a geek forum out there that will tell you what they all do.
The cast-iron certain way to find out the bare minimum is to install windows from scratch, connect to the internet, and look at TM before you install or run any other software apart from your operating system.0 -
Procmon (Microsoft tool) is quite useful. It has more features than the task manager. It can show you specifically what's hitting the disk and registry as well as just what's running.

I've used it previously when I can see something hammering the hard disk but I'm not obviously doing anything that would cause it.
As for finding out what processes do, usually just google the process name will give you the answer. Note that if your problem is with malware, they often deliberately use process names that are similar to genuine ones.0 -
