Shrinking sink plug?

Ok, so I know it's not really shrinking, but the pop-up waste in my bathroom sink seems to be leaking. It's only 1.5 years old and it has just started to leak, so that water is escaping down the side of the plug when I try to run a sink of water.

The plug is going all the way in, there's no blockage underneath it so I can't really understand what is wrong with it. There is a rubber sealing ring around the metal bit that goes down - could that need replacing? It seems ok, but I can't imagine the metal plug has really shrunk.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong with it or how to fix it?

It could be a build up of limescale on the plug. Take the plug out and soak it in some Viakal, or similar limescale remover. This should solve your problem.

The limescale build up could be around the plug hole itself too. Soaking it in vinegar will do the same as the viakal.

It is possible that the rubber has perished on the plug, if the limescale removal doesn't work you'll need a new seal.

The bath in my new house leaks too, like it is too small. Pulled it out and the rubber washer was split. Using a giant flat plug over the top (Morrisons, cost pence) which works fine. Not worth replacing (pink bath, brass fittings... soon to be gone I hope).
