Microsoft security alert

I've been away from my computer for a week. On my return Microsoft Security Centre (Vista) warned of my virus protection (Avast) being out of date, I downloaded Avast updates but the Microsoft message persists. I have tried to download updates again but Avast says that it is now up to date.
Any suggestions?

Check the date and time on your pc. If you have the incorrect system date, it can do all sorts of funny things to Vista. I spent about 2 hours trying to fix McAfee, only to find that everything was fine, but the PC thought it was June!!

So long as Avast is upto date and running fine I wouldnt worry about it

Occasionally an antivirus program may start up more slowly than Microsoft Security Center [sic] thinks it ought to, and you get the message that the AV isn't started. After a time the Security Center realises that it is started, and removes the error message.
