Hi Guys,

I am looking to buy one of these for putting photos on for printing.

I am thinking about 8GB but I really haven't got a clue.

Lets say minimum capacity 100 photos +

What am I looking for in terms of speed etc??

I have 2.0 usb on laptop & need XP & Vista compatible.

I really haven't got a clue.

8GB is probably overkill for 100'ish photos. A quick check on a sample of 85 I took with a 12MPixel camera averaged out at 2.25MB per picture in JPEG format, with sizes ranging between 0.998MB and 3.8MB depending on the amount of detail in the picture. At that rate, 8GB would hold about 3,500 images (if my maths is right!).

Buying two 2GB or 4GB memory sticks should give you plenty of storage in each and more flexibility, and maybe save you a bit of cash. Ignore the USB speed factor: it's just not significant on this kind of volume.

The Sandisk stuff has a good rep, especially for flash drives (USB sticks), but you can't really go wrong anyway as they're all a much of a muchness for what you want to do. Generally the only difference between the cheap and expensive ones is the speed they write and read to/from the drive. If you're only looking at around 100 photos then a 4 gig stick should do what you want with plenty of storage spare.

I got mine from Asda - it's a Maxell 8 gig one and cost me about £20 (they're less now). Had it for years and it gets a lot of (ab)use. It's been dropped on the floor, thrown across the room, driven over, dropped down the bog, been through the washer and generally given a hard life but it still works like new. :)
