Buyer Returned Item to Wrong Name but Right Address

Bit of a long story but I sold 2 very old Viewmaster discs from the 1940's on ebay. When the buyer got them she replied that they were in a bad condition and wanted a refund. The listing stated 'The discs are in a good condition considering they are a childs toy and over 40 years old' so maybe it was my fault for not listing it clearer.

I asked her to return them which she did. The problem is that she has returned them by recorded delivery and the postman tried to deliver them when I was out. But she has also addressed them to my boyfriend who doesn't live with me instead of me. We share a paypal account as we are saving for a wedding and want to be able to buy stuff for it on ebay.

To pick the item up from the sorting office they are asking for proof of address of the named person on the envelope. But my boyfriend doesnt live here yet so we havn't got anything with his name at this address on it.

What can I do? It is reasonable that the item is going to be sent back to her again and I will have to ask her to resend it with my name on it? Will I have to pay both the postage costs?

Any useful replies will be thanked

If the buyer sent it to the person named on the paypal account then she has done the right thing. You will need to try and sort this out with the RM, try to reason with them and take id for both of you and see if they will help at all.

Yeah I think that the thing you can do is try and sort it out with the Royal Mail. In the buyers position I would have done the same thing - ie send the item back to the address on the account!

Is your fella able to go into the sorting office with some proof of ID? Perhaps you would both be able to get in sometime? Explain the situation and maybe just maybe they will be sympathetic!

Surely RM would give you the parcel as you would have the card the postman left and soem ID to proove that you live there or your fella going in with the card and his ID?

My son's passport was carded here a few weks ago, he is working away with all his ID with him, I knew what it was as we were expecting it but had nothng to prove it. The post office let me collect it with the card and my ID no problem.

She didn't though, she sent it to the name on the account but my address instead of the address on the account. So even if my bf does provide ID it will have the wrong address on it.

My local sorting office are quite lax on a saturday and let me pick stuff up with card and no ID.

Also, they are required to deliver to a post code/house number not a name, so you could just call and ask them to redeliver when you know you will be in. They won't mind who as long as they get a signature, usually.

Don't the cards the postie's leave have an box to tick if you want someone else to pick it for you, just tick that, have your boyfriend sign it and take a letter or seomthing with your address on proving you live at that address.

My post office actually never ask for anything off me, though I always take it,

Mmm. If I was returning an item I'd have checked the address first.

This problem has escalated now. I managed to get the items re delivered to my address OK. I gave the buyer a full refund of the items and the postage costs via paypal. Then he said that paypal took some money off that amount for their fees and said I owed him an extra £2 which I sent again, via paypal.

I started a mutual agreement NPB alert so that I could claim back my final valuation fee. He won't complete the alert by because he says I havn't sent him enough money. So this buyer is blackmailing me to give him more money before I can claim back my fees.

I've reported it to ebay but they havn't done anything.

Did you send a refund via send funds, rather than actually refunding him? That would account for the fees being taken off.

Unfortunately if you didn't refund the actual payment, and sent an independant amount, paypal won't recognise that as a refund either.

I sent it as a refund but it wouldnt let me add on extra for his postage costs of sending the item back. So I sent a payment separate for this.
