50% of basic take-home pay or 60% if he gets a packed lunch.
You should also encourage him to open a regular savings account and put a fixed amount into it.
Any extra wages he gets from doing overtime is his and hopefully this will encourage him to stick in and this regime will also (hopefully) get him used to the harsh realities of real life.0 -
I was paying £40 a week 11 years ago -what's that with inflation?
(Think I might go back to mum and ask for a rebate, as I was obviously being overcharged.:D)All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

I charge my son £300 a month which is 1/3 of the costs of the utilities and 1/3 of the food costs. I do his washing and ironing but he is responsible for cleaning his own room, changing the bedding and washing up. He takes a packed lunch to work. Hes in his early 20's and has child maintenance to pay,he only earn s minimum wage but my husband is low paid and i only work part time. Me too!! When I earned £5.00 take home pay (1972) my mum had £2.00 off me & I still had to find lunches, clothes, busfare etc.Tallyhoh! Stopped Smoking October 2000. Saved £29382.50 so far!0 -
I used to pay £150 per month. When I moved out I realised how lucky I was to have only paid that amount!
In between my first place, and moving to my second, I spent six months back at home, and paid £300.0 -
About five years ago I was renting a room in a private house, paying £300 a month to cover rent, electricity etc and use of the washing machine- it would of course be more now. I bought my own food- another £60+. Do you know what the going rate is in your area?
I think it would be fair to charge the going commercial rate. If you want to be kind and subsidise your son I like the idea of charging him less only so long as he can demonstrate the difference is going into a savings account. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

I used to pay £200 pcm, this included food, elecs, internet, taxi-ing, washing and anything I might have missed except ironing! I think I was earning about £800 at the time. My mum always said she would charge us a 1/3 but I think she thoughht I'd be earning less than that when I started paying rent0

I charge my son 40 a week, that includes everything.
I can sympathise with the electric usage - I flick the trip switch every now and then to try and encourage him to get out of the house!0
