You could ask them to reduce the DD payment but ultimately you will end up paying

Why didnt you ring them before, surely it states on your bill how much debt/credit. You could then ask them to increase/decrease DD payments rather than let them do all the work

Thats some debt there unless you use a awful lot of energy that almost a years usage

Unless you get that debt down either increasing or not using any energy you going to be stuck next Winter too. Soon energy usage will decrease with impending improved weather so you need to get a credit for next Winter

I received a notice from my gas/electrical supplier to inform me that my DD is to be increased to £235.00 per month. When I contacted them by telephone, I was informed that the system reduced my DD last june because I was in credit at the time.

However, it seems that the system should not have reduced my DD and as a result I have been landed with well over £1000.00 of debt. I trusted the utility supplier to adjust my payments accordingly, not to put this huge amount of stress on me. The lady I spoke to said that the system was at fault and it should not have happened.

    What recourse do I have?

Any help would be most appreciated.

No recourse as no energy provider guarantees your DD payments will equal your usage, the system relies on regular meter readings to maintain accuracy. You don't appear to have submitted regular meter readings nor kept a lid on your usage during the coldest winter for thirty years. You can ask for time to pay off the debt you have accrued; I would suggest you start reading your meter regularly and looking at ways to reduce wasted energy.

    Hi

After reading some of the 'horror' stories on here, I emailed Npower about my £40 a month dual fuel direct debit. I was worried that £40 wasn't enough especially as I had a £135.02 debit on my last statement. DD increased to £57.00 a month. Hopefully I'll be in credit by the summer (The Customer Service rep I spoke to said most people don't do what I did: keep a close eye on their gas and electric bills/question their direct debit payments :))
