Hi
I bought my two daughters identical (apart from the colour) sony vaio laptop computers, both work fine at home. Daughter one's laptop works fine anywhere else as well...however daughter two's laptop only works at home...shes tried it at friends houses and school yet it doesn't work....it says that it's connected to the internet...then comes up with 'no internet access'
can any one please shed some light on this....thanks

Im guessing its connectng by wireless in the places where it says not connected, i take it your daughter knows to browse for w/less networks and then select the right 1 and enter the passphrase to access the w/less connection. If your daughter has tried this then im not sure what else to try, im also basing my knowledge on xp so it might be worded differently in vista or 70

Yes its wireless and is 7. When she opens up, a list of ISP's appears and she picks the one she needs. She then puts the pass phrase in...it then says its connected to the internet...followed by a message saying no internet access
this is very odd because it works at home0 -
What does it say if she clicks on the wireless icon (in the system tray) and selects 'Open Network and Sharing Center'?
On the top she is probably going to see an incomplete connection to the Internet, but underneath that , where it lists Active Networks, what does it show? It will be either a house (for home), a factory icon (for work) or a bench (for unidentified network).
It would be interesting to see if both your daughters chose the correct type of network when the prompt came up (you get prompted to choose one when the new network is detected).
I suspect the one that works has the 'Home' icon and the one that doesn't has the bench. If so, the type can be changed by clicking the link under the network name.0 -

Hi,
maybe this little video will help, it's for Vista, but may give you an idea.
I was staying in a B&B once, and using their network, lappy would find it but not connect, and this worked for me.
Here's a thing to check that both laptops are set up the same way,
right click on wireless icon (system tray) > network and sharing centre > manage network connections > right click on your network > properties > networking, and make sure both have the same settings as the good laptop.0 -
frugal...you are a star my friend...a combination of that video and the other advice you gave has done the trick...thank you very much :T
oh and my daughter said that you are a top person
