Avira is the best free anti virus software I have ever used, I have tried plenty in the past.

I always take advice from this forum and have been using AVAST for some time now.
    Had no problems at all.
  • I use Zone Alarm Firewall and Avira Anti-virus which seems to work fairly well and the computer does seem to run at a good speed since I switch from AVG to Avira.

Go to 'av-comparatives.com' and check their test results.
Be careful: some of the 'free' AV people only allowed their paid-for 'Premium' versions to be tested - not the freebie ones.
Also, most of the paid-for products include 'bad behaviour' detectors which try to spot new malware on the fly and before it's formally identified and listed: not all of the freebies can do this. Check the 'Retrospectives' report to see how good the tested programs fared in this respect.

Be sure to read the notes towards the end of page 4 of the 'On demand' report. It's good advice.

Watch out for any product which reports a lot of 'false positives'. These could result in perfectly valid software being deleted from your machine by mistake. (Surprisingly, McAfee scores very badly in this respect.)

Take other people's experiences as an indication only. It's not called a Personal Computer for nothing: the way you use your machine may differ widely from the way they use theirs - especially if you allow kids loose on the net.
  • Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast all are getting good press at the moment. I personally use Avira having tried all three. AVG is atrocious.

I wouldn't bother with Zonealarm, more hassle than benifit. The hardware firewall in your router coupled with Windows firewall is perfectly fine.

Finally an on-demand scanner for malware is worth while running every once in a while, Malwarebytes is the best for this.

    Free Antivirus:
    Only download and use one:
Avast as near as you'll get to a paid for anti-virus in features for free, quick frequent updates.
Microsoft Security Essentials good for "set and forget" security.
Avira AntiVir brilliant anti-virus very slow updates. Free Antispyware:
All these only provide on-demand scanning unless you pay for them. Its best to disable them from starting on boot as they can be started manually when needed. You can have all of them on your sysytem though.
Superantispyware a brilliant anit-spyware and portable too.
MalwareBytes excellent for the rogue security programs.
A-Squared possibly not as good as the two above but still worth a look.Free Firewalls:
        Only download and use one:
PCTools Firewall Plus Very good free firewall easy to use.
Online Armor Another good firewall no automatic updates though.
Comodo Very good firewall heavy on resources lots of popups which can get annoying.

I wouldnt touch Zonealarm. Its absolutely p*ss poor these days. Youd be safer sticking to windows inbuilt firewall
